Background
- Conducted in 2004 as a school-based survey involving students aged 13-15.
- Two-stage cluster sampling: initially, schools selected with probability proportional to enrollment size, then classes randomly selected.
- Response rates include 100% school participation, 100% class participation, 98.8% student response, and a total sample of 3,434 students.

Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 19.7% (Boys: 28.8%, Girls: 13.3%).
- Currently use any tobacco product: 7.2% (Boys: 10.8%, Girls: 4.8%).
- Currently smoke cigarettes: 5.5% (Boys: 7.6%, Girls: 4.2%).
- Currently smoke cigars: 3.8% (Boys: 5.4%, Girls: 2.8%).
- Initiated smoking before age ten: 29.1% (Boys: 33.3%, Girls: 20.8%).
- Among never smokers, 27.4% are likely to initiate smoking next year (Boys: 26.8%, Girls: 27.8%).
Access, Availability, and SHS Exposure
- Access: 78.9% students buy cigarettes in stores, 92.0% not refused due to age.
- Usability: 5.7% usually smoke at home.
- SHS exposure: 64.4% live in homes with others smoking, 64.9% exposed outside home.
- Parental smoking: 37.1% have one or more smoking parents.
- Health beliefs: 91.1% think secondhand smoke harmful, 90% support public smoking bans.
Cessation Behaviors by Smokers
- 69.5% want to quit smoking.
- 80.8% tried to stop in the past year.
- 73.1% received help to stop.
- 3.1% always have or crave a cigarette in the morning.
Media and Advertising Impact
- Television: 80.8% saw anti-smoking messages vs. 76.4% saw pro-smoking messages.
- Billboards: 64.8% saw anti-smoking ads vs. 66.0% saw pro-smoking ads.
- Newspapers/magazines: 48.2% saw anti-smoking ads vs. 57.3% saw pro-cigarette ads.
