Overview
The Kosovo GYTS is a school-based survey conducted in 2004 using a two-stage cluster sample design with high response rates (98.2% school, 100% class, 89% student, overall 87.4%). A total of 2,444 students aged 13-15 participated. It assesses tobacco use prevalence and determinants like access/price, secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, cessation, media/advertising, and school curricula, informing comprehensive tobacco control programs.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use Highlights
- 27.7% of students ever smoked cigarettes (Boys 35.7%, Girls 20.2%).
- 10.4% currently use any tobacco product (Boys 12.8%, Girls 8.1%).
- 6.7% currently smoke cigarettes (Boys 7.9%, Girls 5.6%).
- 1.1% are current daily cigarette smokers (Boys 1.3%, Girls 0.9%).
- 4.0% currently smoke cigars (Boys 6.0%, Girls 2.0%).
- 23.7% initiated smoking before age 10 (Boys 26.7%, Girls 18.8%).
- 11.5% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking next year (Boys 12.5%, Girls 10.8%).
Access and Availability
- 88.8% of smokers did not face purchase refusal due to age.
- High access: 26.0% smoke at home, 34.9% buy cigarettes from stores.
Secondhand Smoke Exposure
- 84.2% live in homes where others smoke in their presence.
- 72.8% exposed to smoke outside home.
- 93.5% believe smoking should be banned from public places.
- 70.2% think SHS is harmful.
- 54.2% have one or more parents who smoke.
Cessation Statistics for Smokers
- 74.5% want to stop smoking.
- 71.9% tried to quit in the past year.
- 88.4% received help to stop smoking.
- 10.3% smoke daily first thing in morning.
Media and Advertising
- 83.8% saw anti-smoking messages on TV vs. 76.1% saw pro messages.
- 58.0% saw anti ads on billboards vs. 65.8% saw pro messages.
- 65.9% saw anti ads in newspapers/magazines vs. 70.5% saw pro-cigarettes ads.
- 11.4% offered free cigarettes by tobacco reps.
- 18.4% have items with cigarette brand logos.
School Curriculum
- 56.6% learned about smoking dangers in class.
- 49.2% discussed reasons for smoking among peers.
- 52.9% were taught effects of tobacco use in past year.
