GATS Ethiopia 2016 Summary

The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) in Ethiopia assessed adult tobacco use and related factors in 2016. Methodology used a national household survey with a standardized protocol, achieving high response rates and representing all non-institutionalized adults aged 15 and above.

• Tobacco Use: Overall current tobacco users were 5.0%, with higher rates among men (8.1%) than women (1.8%). Daily smokers stood at 3.7% overall, including various subgroups like cigarette smokers and former users.
• Smoking Cessation: 68.7% of current smokers planned to quit; 42.0% made a quit attempt in the past year, with common methods being counseling and self-help.
• Secondhand Smoke: 29.3% of adults reported workplace exposure, and 12.6% experienced home exposure.
• Economics: The median cost for 20 manufactured cigarettes was 18.4 Ethiopian Birr, with a median monthly cigarette expenditure of 150.1 Birr.
• Media and Perception: Limited exposure to cigarette marketing or advertisements; however, high awareness of health risks, with 88.0% believing smoking causes serious illness and 75.9% recognizing passive smoke dangers.
