GATS Summary: Global Adult Tobacco Survey in Poland

The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is a standardized, nationally representative survey that monitors adult tobacco use and tracks key tobacco control indicators. It is designed to help countries implement and evaluate tobacco control programs, and to support their obligations under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). In Poland, the survey was conducted by the Cancer Center and Institute, Medical University of Warsaw, and Mentor Research International, under the coordination of the Polish Ministry of Health and WHO Country Office in Poland.

- Current smokers: 30.3% of Poles (9.8 million) are current smokers, including 33.5% of men and 21.0% of women.

- Former daily smokers: 16.3% of adults (men: 21.8%, women: 11.3%).

Smokeless Tobacco Use
- Current users: 0.5% of adults overall, with 1.0% of men and 0.1% of women.
Cessation
- Quit attempts in the past 12 months: 35.1% of current smokers.
- Smokers planning to quit: 50.1% of current smokers.
- Smokers not intending to quit: 43.7% of current smokers.
- Pharmacological cessation methods: 25.2% of current smokers used these methods.
- Advice from healthcare providers: 41.8% of current smokers received advice to quit.
Secondhand Smoke Exposure
- At home: 44.2% of adults (14.1 million) were exposed to tobacco smoke.
- At workplace: 33.6% of adults (4.3 million) were exposed.
- In gastronomic venues: 72.1% of adults were exposed.
- Most common exposure places: Bars, pubs, and night clubs (87.6%), followed by restaurants/coffee shops/bistros (50.9%), and at home (28.0%).
Economics
- Average cost per pack: 9.1 PLN.
- Average monthly expenditure: 208.52 PLN.
- Percentage of GDP spent on cigarettes: 2.6%.
- Low-cost cigarette buyers: 7.9% of current smokers purchased the least expensive cigarettes.
Media and Awareness
- Anti-smoking information exposure: 61.8% of adults noticed such information on TV or radio.
- Warning labels impact: 17.7% of current smokers thought about quitting after seeing warning labels.
- Most remembered warning: "Your doctor or pharmacist will help you quit smoking".
- Tobacco advertising exposure: 13.9% of adults noticed cigarette advertisements in the media.
- Counter advertising: 15.3% of adults noticed any form of cigarette promotion.
Knowledge, Attitudes & Perceptions
- Awareness of health risks: 91.5% of adults believe smoking causes serious illness.
- Awareness of secondhand smoke risks: 81.4% of adults believe exposure to tobacco smoke causes serious illness in non-smokers.
- Awareness of smokeless tobacco risks: 39.0% of adults believe smokeless tobacco use causes serious illness.
