The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is a standardized, nationally representative survey designed to monitor adult tobacco use and evaluate the effectiveness of tobacco control programs. Cessation

- 48.7% of current smokeless users plan to or are thinking about quitting.

Second-hand Smoke
- 63.0% of workers (11.5 million adults) are exposed to tobacco smoke at the workplace.
- 45.0% of adults are exposed to tobacco smoke in public places, including government buildings, healthcare facilities, restaurants, and public transportation.
Media and Awareness
- 40.5% of adults noticed anti-cigarette smoking information on television or radio.
- 38.4% of adults saw cigarette marketing in stores where cigarettes are sold.
- 32.1% of adults noticed cigarette marketing outside of stores or sporting event sponsorship.
- 54.1% of adults noticed anti-smokeless tobacco information on television or radio.

Economic Indicators
- The average price of a pack of manufactured cigarettes is 32.1 taka.
- The average price of a pack of bidis is 6.2 taka.

- The price of 100 packs of manufactured cigarettes is 5.0% of per capita GDP.

Methodology
- GATS uses a global standardized methodology.
- The survey in Bangladesh was conducted in 2009 by the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and the National Institute of Population Research and Training.
- A multi-stage, geographically clustered sample design was used to ensure national representativeness.
- 9629 completed interviews were conducted.
- The household response rate was 97.7%, the individual response rate was 95.8%, and the overall response rate was 93.6%.
