Lithuania GYTS Summary (Ages 13-15)
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Lithuania was conducted in 2009 among 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade students using a two-stage cluster sampling method. A total of 1,237 students participated, with an overall response rate of 65.4%. This survey examined smoking prevalence, access to tobacco, secondhand smoke exposure, cessation attempts, media influences, and school-based tobacco education.
Key findings show high tobacco use: approximately 74% of students had smoked cigarettes at some point, with higher rates among boys. About 33.7% used any tobacco product currently, and cigarette smoking was reported by 30.8% of respondents. Nearly one-third used other tobacco forms in the past month.
Factors enabling use include easy access—many bought cigarettes without age-related refusal—and widespread secondhand smoke exposure, with 68% believing others smoke around them. Opinions on tobacco control are generally supportive, with most students endorsing public smoking bans due to health risks.
The media plays a role, with anti-smoking messages seen by the majority, yet pro-tobacco advertisements also received high visibility. School programs covering tobacco dangers and reasons for youth use were common, but factors like early initiation and parental influences, including one-third with smokers at home, underscore challenges in tobacco control.
