Niue Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary

Survey Overview

The Niue GYTS was a school-based survey conducted in 2009, focusing on 13-15-year-olds. A census method was used to produce representative data; the school response rate was 100%, the class response rate was 100%, and the student response rate was 46.9%. A total of 36 students participated. The survey included data on cigarette and other tobacco use, along with five determinants: access/availability and price, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), cessation, media and advertising, and school curriculum.

Prevalence Highlights

• 27.3% of students ever smoked cigarettes.
• 15.9% currently use any tobacco product.
• 10.5% currently smoke cigarettes.
• 11.4% currently use other tobacco products.
• 95.8% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking next year.

Key Determinants

• Access and Availability: 83.6% usually smoke at home; 50.0% bought cigarettes without being refused due to age; 34.1% have one or more parents who smoke.
• Exposure to SHS: 34.9% live in homes with others smoking; 59.1% are exposed to smoke outside the home.
• Cessation: 32.9% of current smokers want to stop; 66.4% tried to stop in the past year; 57.1% received help to stop.
• Media and Advertising: 64.4% saw anti-smoking media in the past 30 days; 47.8% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards; 67.5% saw pro-cigarette ads in newspapers/magazines; 47.8% were taught about smoking dangers in class; 37.9% discussed smoking reasons in class.

Knowledge and Attitudes

• Most students (65.2%) think smoke from others is harmful; 74.2% support banning smoking in public places; 59.1% are exposed to SHS.
• Higher likelihood among never smokers to initiate smoking; attitudes toward SHS exposure and public smoking bans are generally positive.
