Brazil - Vitoria Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
Survey Overview: The Brazil-Vitoria Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in 2009 focused on students aged 13-15 from 7th to 8th grades of elementary school and 1st grade of high school. It used a two-stage cluster sampling design, with schools selected based on enrollment size, followed by random class selection. High response rates were achieved: school 96.2%, class 100%, student 85.2%, and overall 81.9%, with 1,157 participants.

- Tobacco Use Prevalence:
- 26.4% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (boys: 28.6%, girls: 24.1%).
- 12.2% currently use any tobacco product (boys: 12.6%, girls: 11.1%).
- 6.2% currently smoke cigarettes (boys: 5.7%, girls: 6.3%).
- 7.2% currently use other tobacco products (boys: 8.1%, girls: 5.8%).

- Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure:
- 22.1% live in homes where others smoke.

- 92.7% support banning smoking in public places.
- 85.2% believe secondhand smoke is harmful.
- 25.0% have parents who smoke.
- Cessation:
- 63.8% of current users tried to stop smoking in the past year.
- 63.8% ever received help to quit.
- Media and Advertising:
- 82.6% saw anti-smoking media messages in the last 30 days.
- 3.7% have objects with cigarette brand logos.
- 8.6% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco representatives.
- School-Based Factors:
- 41.0% were taught about smoking dangers in class.
- 16.6% discussed smoking reasons with peers.
- 31.6% learned about tobacco effects in school.
