Syria GYTS Summary
Introduction
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in Syria (2002) assesses tobacco use prevalence among adolescents aged 13-15. Using a two-stage cluster sampling method with high response rates, it provides representative data on key determinants of tobacco use.
Key Findings

Tobacco Use Prevalence
- 11.0% of students ever smoked cigarettes (Boys: 14.9%, Girls: 4.9%).
- 20.0% currently use any tobacco product (Boys: 22.9%, Girls: 15.0%).
- 6.3% currently smoke cigarettes (Boys: 8.1%, Girls: 3.1%).
- 17.6% currently use other tobacco products (Boys: 19.2%, Girls: 14.5%).
- Risk of initiation: 9.4% of never smokers are likely to start smoking next year.

Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure
- 54.5% live in homes where others smoke, nearly all (80-81%) believe smoke from others is harmful.
- 49.7% exposed to smoke in public places outside home.
- 52.1% have at least one parent who smokes, and 80% support banning smoking in public.

Attitudes and Cessation
- 70.6% of current smokers want to quit; 68.8% have tried to stop in the past year.
- 83.1% sought help to stop smoking.
- 88.9% saw anti-smoking media within 30 days; 63-70% viewed pro-cigarette ads.

- 54.6% learned about smoking dangers in class; 39.8% discussed reasons for smoking with peers.
- Significant media exposure: 10.5% own items with cigarette logos; media influence high.
