Brazil - Rio Grande do Sul GYTS Summary (Ages 13-15)
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) fact sheet reports on data collected in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul region for students aged 13-15 in 2002. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design, with a high school response rate of 96.0%, class response rate of 100.0%, student response rate of 87.1%, and an overall response rate of 83.6%. A total of 1,231 students participated.
Key findings on tobacco prevalence include:
- 46.0% had ever smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among girls (52.6%).
- 20.4% currently use any tobacco product, with 17.7% smoking cigarettes and 6.0% using other products.
- Among never smokers, 18.7% are likely to start smoking in the next year.
Determinants of tobacco use assessed cover several areas:
- Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) was high, with 48.2% living in homes where others smoke, and over 2 in 5 students exposed outside home. More than 80% believe SHS is harmful and should be banned in public places.
- Cessation efforts show 56.8% of current smokers want to quit, and 63.1% have attempted to stop in the past year, with some receiving help.
- Media influences: Nearly 90% were exposed to anti-smoking messages, while most saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards and in print media. 9.4% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco companies.
- School-based interventions: 53.6% discussed smoking dangers in class, and 49.8% learned about tobacco effects during the past year.
The survey highlights significant tobacco use among youth, high SHS exposure, and the influence of media and social factors. Data supports the potential for comprehensive tobacco control programs.
