Electric SUV and Large Cars Continue to Dominate EV Sales
- Dominance Growth: Electric SUVs and large cars remain overwhelmingly popular in the global EV market. In 2022, electric SUVs represented about 35% of global electric car sales, while conventional SUVs accounted for a similar share of total car sales. Large cars also saw strong growth, approximately doubling their sales compared to 2021.
- Affordability Concerns: While electric cars are generally more affordable in China (average price below USD 10,000), prices in Europe and the US are significantly higher. This affordability gap restricts mass-market uptake in these regions, although government incentives temporarily lower prices.
- Increased Cargo Space/Range: Larger model choices offer increased cargo space and extended driving ranges, boosting their appeal despite higher costs.
- Policy Focus: Although policy efforts have increased focus on charging infrastructure for all EV segments, electric SUVs primarily require private home charging, which poses fewer grid challenges for utilities initially but requires more charging infrastructure overall.
- Material Requirements and Climate Impact: The larger battery size and weight of electric SUVs increase material requirements (critical minerals, steel, aluminium, plastics), raise concerns about their climate impact due to greater GHG emissions during use, and result in higher lifecycle CO2 emissions compared to smaller EVs like city cars. Importantly, their displacement of petrol and diesel fuel in cars also contributes positively to climate goals.
This preference for larger EVs presents ongoing challenges and opportunities for policy, affordability, and the transition to sustainable transportation.
