Global EV Outlook 2023: Summary
By 2022, record high electric vehicle (EV) sales driven by strong demand in China, Europe, and the United States confirm the booming growth of EV markets. Global EV sales, including both light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles, increased by nearly 50% year-on-year, reaching over 10 million units, with a market share of 14%.
China dominates the global EV market, accounting for around 60% of EV sales in 2022. In Europe, the market share jumped to 25%, while the United States showed significant growth, reaching an 8% share. These markets continued to expand momentum and adoption of EVs, with strong government policies and incentives playing a crucial role.
Batteries are a key pillar of the EV growth, with demand increasing by about 65% to reach 550 GWh in 2022. Global battery manufacturing capacity is expanding rapidly and could increase by over 5 TWh by 2030. New battery production sites and supply chains have been announced across multiple countries, including the European Union, the United States, and Asia-Pacific.
EV adoption is boosting the deployment of Charging Infrastructure. By the end of 2022, there were over 2.7 million public charging points globally. Installation rates have accelerated through government funding mechanisms, with focus on meeting consumer needs and facilitating EV uptake.
Future Outlook Through 2030, EV market deployment is expected to grow exponentially in line with announced policies and national targets, resulting in nearly 250 million EVs by 2030 under the Announced Pledges Scenario. This implies one out of seven cars sold globally will be electric.
Challenges & Opportunities Despite the exponential growth, challenges such as critical mineral supply, battery recycling, charging infrastructure coverage, and policy consistency between countries and regions still require attention. However, investments in R&D and supply chain development are addressing some of these issues, while governments and industry are aligning on ambitious climate goals that could further accelerate the transition.
