报告摘要
The study examines the private returns to education for Afghan women by analyzing wage premiums, the impact of the Taliban's education bans, and the economic losses from restricting female education and workforce participation.
Findings reveal that women's education yield higher returns (13%) compared to men (3%), emphasizing their significant contribution to economic growth. Prioritizing education for women can boost productivity and human capital development, with each additional year of schooling leading to substantial wage gains. The Taliban's 2022 bans on girls' education and university access severely jeopardize educational equity and hinder economic progress, projected to cost Afghanistan over US $1.4 billion annually due to lost economic output. The analysis employs instrumental variables and regression-discontinuity methods, confirming that increased compulsory schooling by 7 grades boosts earnings, with women benefiting disproportionately. The research underscores the need to reverse discriminatory policies to restore sustainable development and social stability.
