报告摘要
Iran Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in 2007 for students aged 13-15 assessed tobacco use and its determinants. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with high response rates, involving 1153 participants from middle and high school grades.
Key findings:
- Prevalence: 26.6% of students currently use any tobacco product, and 17.5% have ever smoked cigarettes (boys higher: 32.9% current use, girls lower). Overall, over one-quarter use tobacco, with 3.0% current cigarette smokers.
- Determinants:
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS): High exposure, with 35.4% living in homes where others smoke and 44.8% exposed outside home. Over two-thirds believe SHS is harmful.
- Access/Availability: Most cigarettes bought from stores, and SHS exposure common.
- Media: 92.3% saw anti-smoking messages, but 55.8% saw pro-cigarette ads. Students often see brand logos on objects.
- School: 29% discussed reasons for smoking in class, and others learned about tobacco dangers.
- Attitudes: Students show support for banning smoking in public places (70.3% agree).
The survey highlights high youth tobacco use and significance of SHS and media influences, indicating areas for comprehensive tobacco control programs.
