报告摘要
Vietnam conducted the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in 2007 targeting students aged 13-15, with a high response rate of 92.1%. The survey is part of a comprehensive school tobacco control program, focusing on smoking prevalence and its determinants.
Key Highlights:
- Prevalence: 11.0% of students ever smoked cigarettes, with boys (17.6%) more than girls (5.5%). About 3.8% used any tobacco product, including 3.3% who smoked cigarettes, and 1.2% used other products like e-cigarettes. Six percent of never smokers were likely to start smoking next year.
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): Nearly 60% lived in homes where others smoked, and 71.2% were exposed to smoke outside their homes. High awareness: 85% thought smoking is harmful to them and 88.4% supported banning smoking in public places.
- Access and Media: Most students saw anti-smoking messages, but pro-cigarette ads were common on billboards and in media. Some (8.2%) were offered free cigarettes, and 11.3% had brand-logo items.
- School Factors: Geographic proportional sampling method used for data collection. About 73% learned about smoking dangers in school, while 45.5% discussed youth smoking reasons with peers.
Overall, the survey indicates early tobacco use patterns and influential factors among Vietnamese youth, informing policies on youth tobacco prevention.
