Ecuador-Zamora GYTS Summary

Survey Design

The Ecuador-Zamora Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) employed a two-stage cluster sampling method to collect representative data from students aged 13-15 in grades 8-12 (vo, no, mo, and 1ro levels). Schools were selected with probability proportional to enrollment size, and then classes were randomly sampled. The school response rate was 90.0%, the class response rate was 100.0%, the student response rate was 94.8%, and the overall response rate was 85.3%. A total of 352 students participated in the survey, conducted in 2007 as part of a school-based assessment.

Prevalence of Tobacco Use

• 74.2% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (83.3% boys, 66.4% girls).
• 39.2% currently use any tobacco product (48.1% boys, 31.7% girls).
• 41.8% currently smoke cigarettes (47.9% boys, 35.9% girls).
• 9.9% currently use other tobacco products (12.4% boys, 7.9% girls).
• 35.9% of never smokers are likely to initiate smoking next year.

Determinants and Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)

• High SHS exposure: 38.7% live in homes where others smoke in their presence, and 64.3% are exposed to smoke in places outside their home.
• 83.8% believe smoking should be banned from public places, and 20.8% have most or all friends who smoke.
• 40.8% have one or more parents who smoke, and parents of about 20.8% offered free cigarettes.

Knowledge and Attitudes

• Most students (83.8%) think smoke from others is harmful to them, and 84.3% saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days.
• 71.4% saw pro-cigarette ads in newspapers or magazines; 80.0% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards.
• Many believe tobacco use is harmful; 69.8% recognize the dangers, and 83.0% of current smokers want to stop.

Media and Advertising

• 18.0% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco companies, and 11.6% have objects with cigarette brand logos.
• 71.6% of current smokers tried to stop in the past year, and 83.0% have received help.

School-Curriculum Components

• 64.9% were taught about the dangers of smoking, and 22.0% discussed reasons for smoking age-appropriately.
• 45.5% learned about effects of tobacco use in school classes during the past year.
