Tunisia GYTS Summary (Ages 13-15)
Overview
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey in Tunisia (conducted in 2007) employed a two-stage cluster sampling design to gather representative data from 1,499 students aged 13-15. This school-based survey aimed to assess tobacco use prevalence and identify determinants such as access, price, secondhand smoke exposure, media influence, and school-related factors, to inform comprehensive tobacco control programs.
Key Findings on Prevalence
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 24.6% (39.8% among boys, 9.5% among girls)
- Currently use any tobacco product: 18.3% (27.8% among boys, 8.8% among girls)
- Currently smoke cigarettes: 8.3% (15.1% among boys, 1.6% among girls)
- Currently use other tobacco products: 13.9% (19.9% among boys, 7.8% among girls)
Highlights and Risk Factors
- About 18.3% of students currently use tobacco, with smoking being the most common form. The likelihood of initiating smoking next year is high among never smokers.
- Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is widespread: 51.9% live in homes where others smoke in their presence, and 65.2% are exposed in public places.
- Attitudes toward tobacco: 85.3% think smoking should be banned in public places; 73.1% believe SHS is harmful to them. Access factors show that 70.2% buy cigarettes without age-related refusal.
- Cessation attempts: 84.0% of current smokers want to quit, and 71.4% have tried to stop in the past year.
- Media and advertising influence: 71.8% saw anti-smoking messages recently, while over half (58.7%) saw pro-cigarette ads in the past 30 days. Four out of five students have seen such ads on billboards or in media.
- School-based factors: Students receive education on tobacco dangers and engage in discussions on smoking reasons, but only a minority (37.5%) discussed age-specific smoking.
Additional Notes
The school response, class response, and overall student response rates were 100%, 100%, and 92.4%, respectively. For more details, contact Salwa Selmi via email.
