From 1 January to 11 December 2022, 82,624 laboratory-confirmed mpox cases and 65 deaths were reported globally across 110 countries. Since the last report on 1 December, 1,517 new cases (1.9% increase) and 10 deaths were recorded. The weekly case decline was 46%, with marked drops in the Americas (-47%) and European Region (-14%). The top 10 countries accounted for 86% of cases: USA, Brazil, Spain, France, Colombia, UK, Germany, Peru, Mexico, and Canada.
Risk Assessment and Regional Breakdown
- Risk levels: Americas - high, African Region - moderate, Southeast Asia and Western Pacific - low.
- Regional details: Americas had the highest cases (55,722) and deaths (44); European Region followed with 25,581 cases and 5 deaths.
- Stable or declining trends: Most countries with no cases in over 21 days.
Epidemiology and Transmission
- Demographics: 96.8% of cases were men (median age 34 years), with high concentration among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (85.9% of reported cases). Transmission was primarily sexual, accounting for 72.7% of events.

Responses and Missions
- Field support: WHO missions to Nigeria (Oct 2022) and Central African Republic (Nov 2022) to strengthen surveillance, labs, and clinical management.
- Global actions: 20 countries expressed interest in tecovirimat for emergency use; technical briefings and webinars provided guidance on prevention, control, and stigma reduction.
Technical Guidance and Recommendations
- WHO issued interim guidance on vaccines, surveillance, clinical management, and risk communication.
- Partners issued statements recommending new name "mpox"; emphasis on sexual health focus, integrating mpox with HIV/STI services, and ensuring equitable access to resources.
- Data caveats noted: Variability in reporting, case definitions, and delays.
Key Outcomes
- Acknowledged stabilization but stressed ongoing risks; behavior changes and immunity may contribute to declines, but origins unclear.
- Call for sustained efforts on community engagement, surveillance intensity, and research to address disparities in outbreak response worldwide.
