报告摘要
In September 2022, a multilateral mpox epidemic was declared a WHO Public Health Emergency of International Concern. As of 8 May 2023, total reported cases have reached 87,377 globally, with 140 deaths and infections in 111 countries across all WHO regions. This represents an increase from the earlier report on 27 April 2023.
Region-specific developments include significant activity in the Americas and Western Pacific regions. For instance, Brazil led case reports in the Americas with over 10,000 cases, while the Western Pacific saw involvement in countries like Japan, China, and Australia. Most cases are detected in men, primarily men who have sex with men (MSM), which correlates with high transmission rates through sexual contact during parties or other gatherings.
The global risk is assessed as moderate, with low regional risk in South-East Asia and Western Pacific, and moderate in other areas like Africa. Factors influencing risk include underreporting, regional differences, and the potential for sustained human-to-human transmission.
WHO's risk assessment highlights ongoing transmission risks, gaps in vaccine availability, and unpredictable case trends. Response efforts include enhanced surveillance, updated risk communication, and resource allocation. Continuous molecular analysis shows limited diversity in circulating strains.
WHO recommends public health measures, including contact tracing, isolation, and strengthening response capacity, ahead of eliminating mpox.
