报告摘要
Mauritania Global Youth Tobacco Survey Summary
The Mauritania Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in 2006 among students aged 13-15 years revealed high rates of tobacco use and significant gender disparities. Key findings include:
- 29.2% of students had ever smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among boys (32.4%) compared to girls (24.9%).
- 30.7% currently use any tobacco product, including 19.5% who smoke cigarettes and 18.0% who use other tobacco forms. Smoking initiation is high, with 19.9% of never smokers likely to start next year.
Determinants of tobacco use show strong influences, such as high secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure: nearly 37% of students live in homes with other smokers, and 53.6% are exposed outside home. About 78% of current smokers have tried to quit in the past year, indicating cessation efforts.
Attitudes and knowledge are mixed, with 74% believing SHS is harmful and 72.2% supportive of smoking bans in public places. Media plays a role, with wide exposure to both anti-tobacco messages and pro-tobacco advertising.
School-based factors are important, as 39.6% of students learned about tobacco dangers in class during the past year.
This summary is based on the survey data from 2006 with a response rate of 83.3% among 2,040 students.
