Burkina Faso Ouagadougou GYTS Summary (2006)
Design and Sample
- Survey Type: Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS).
- Population: Students aged 13-15 years (6ème, 5ème, 4ème grades) in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
- Sample Size: 1,356 students.
- Sampling Method: Two-stage cluster sampling (school and class levels).
- Response Rates: 100% school, 100% class, 94.7% student response.
Key Findings
1. Tobacco Use:
- Ever Smoked Cigarettes: 18.8% (Males: 29.5%, Females: 8.1%).
- Current Tobacco Product Use (Past 30 days): 13.6%.
- *Current Cigarette Smoking: 8.4%. (Males: 14.1%, Females: 2.4%).
- *Current Use of Other Tobacco Products: 7.2%. (Males: 9.3%, Females: 4.8%).
Lowest Prevalence: Current use of waterpipes (2.2%).
Highest Prevalence among Non-Males: Use of tobacco in the form of 'moutere', betel quid or snuff (11.4%).
Highest Prevalence among Males: Fire-cured tobacco, cigars, or cigarillos (12.9%).
2. Prediction of Initiation:
- 9% of never smokers likely to initiate smoking in the next year.
3. Secondhand Smoke (SHS) Exposure:
- Homes where others smoke: 32.9% of students live there during their presence.
- Exposure outside home: 48.8%.
- Parents smoking: 15.7% have one or more parents who smoke.
- Friends smoking perception: 6.9% have most/all friends who smoke.
- Attitude towards SHS: 72.6% think SHS is harmful.
4. Cessation:
- Intentions: 95.5% of current smokers want to stop.
- Attempts: 89.9% tried to quit in the past year.
- Help-seeking: 100% have received help to stop.
5. Media and Advertising:
- Saw anti-smoking media: 77.3% in the last 30 days.
- Saw pro-cigarette ads (billboards, newspapers/magazines): 68.2% + 61.7% (specific mentions).
- Percentage owning branded objects: 23.0% (cigarettes noted).
- Never received a free cigarette offer.
- Education in Schools: 58.9% learned about smoking dangers, 33.8% discussed reasons, 48.0% learned about tobacco effects.
6. Attitudes:
- Over 1/5 (21.6%) think smoking increases friends.
- Similar percentages (21.0% for males, 18.4% for females) think smoking enhances attractiveness.
7. Call for Smokefree Environments:
- 89.2% think smoking should be banned from public places.
