Summary of Tuvalu GYTS on Youth Tobacco Use
Introduction
The Tuvalu Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) is a school-based study conducted in 2006, targeting students aged 13-15 to assess tobacco use prevalence and its determinants. This survey aims to provide data for tobacco control programs.
Methodology
- Employed a two-stage cluster sample design.
- Selected schools proportionally to enrollment size.
- At the second stage, random selection of classes and students.
- Response rates: 100% school and class, 91.1% student participation overall, with 542 students involved.
Findings on Prevalence
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 36.5% (Boy 45.1%, Girl 30.4%).
- Currently use any tobacco product: 36.4% (Boy 41.6%, Girl 32.7%).
- Currently smoke cigarettes: 26.6% (Boy 33.2%, Girl 22.1%).
- Currently use other tobacco products: 27.1% (Boy 33.3%, Girl 22.4%).
Findings on Determinants
Access and Availability
- 19.3% usually smoke at home.
- 23.7% buy cigarettes in stores, with few age refusals.
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)
- 76.6% live in homes where others smoke.
- 76.7% are exposed outside their homes.
- 89.5% believe smoking should be banned in public places.
Media and Advertising
- 90.0% saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days.
- 78.2% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards.
- 73.5% saw pro-cigarette ads in media.
- 25.9% have an object with a cigarette brand logo.
School Environment
- 69.2% were taught about smoking dangers in class.
- 43.6% discussed reasons for smoking with peers.
- 61.0% learned about tobacco effects.
Key Knowledge, Attitudes, and Cessation
Attitudes
- 70.6% think smoking reduces friends, especially for boys.
- Most find smoking unattractive.
Cessation
- 98.7% of current smokers want to quit.
- 93.0% tried to stop in the past year.
- 92.3% received help to quit.
Media Exposure
- High exposure to both anti- and pro-tobacco messages, with pro-cigarette billboards more commonly seen.
