Mobile Phone Market Analysis Summary

Part 1: Overall Market in China

December 2022 domestic mobile phone shipments were 27.9 million, representing a 16.6 percent year-over-year decrease. In 2022, total shipments reached 271.5 million, down 22.6 percent from the previous year. Additionally, 42 new models were released in December 2022, a 25.0 percent reduction compared to 2021. For the full year 2022, the total number of new models dropped to 423, an 12.4 percent decrease.

Part 2: Development of 5G Mobile Phones

In December 2022, 5G mobile phone shipments totaled 23.2 million, accounting for 83.4 percent of the total shipments. The month saw 18 new 5G models introduced, making up 42.9 percent of all new model releases. For 2022 overall, 5G phone shipments were 213.9 million units, with 220 new models accounted for, representing 78.8 percent of smartphone launches and a 52.0 percent decrease in new models.

Part 3: Local and MNC Brands

December 2022 shipments for local brands stood at 22.0 million, down 22.8 percent year-over-year and comprising 78.9 percent of total shipments. The number of new models released by local brands was 40, a 20.0 percent decline, and accounted for 95.2 percent of all new models. In contrast, exports from China in 2022 were 228.6 million shipments, down 24.7 percent and representing 84.2 percent market share. New models by local brands numbered 386, reduced by 11.9 percent, and made up 91.3 percent of total releases.

Part 4: Development of Smart Phones

December 2022 smart phone shipments were 26.8 million, down 17.9 percent year-over-year and accounting for 96.3 percent of total monthly shipments. Over the past 12 months, smart phone shipments aggregated to 263.7 million, a 23.1 percent decline overall. New smart phone models released in December were 33, down 28.3 percent from the previous year and accounting for 78.6 percent of new models. In the 12-month period, 351 new models were introduced, down 13.1 percent in number.
