Methodology
- Conducted among students aged 13-15 in grades 1-3 using a two-stage cluster sample design.
- First stage: Selection of schools with probability proportional to enrollment size.
- Second stage: Random selection of classes, with eligibility for all students in those classes.
- Response rates: 100% school response, 98.6% class response, 91.1% student response, and 89.8% overall response.
- Sample size: 1,870 students represented Guayaquil.
Prevalence and Key Findings
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 32.3% (Boys 34.0%, Girls 31.3%).
- Current tobacco use: 14.7% (Boys 14.7%, Girls 14.5%).
- Current cigarette smokers: 9.1% (Boys 9.1%, Girls 9.0%).
- Other tobacco products use: 8.2% (Boys 9.1%, Girls 7.4%).
Determinants and Attitudes
- Access and Price: 72.7% of smokers bought cigarettes without age refusal.
- Secondhand Smoke (SHS): High exposure—31.3% live in homes with smoking, 49.7% exposed outside homes.
- Cessation: 62.0% want to stop, 62.3% attempted cessation in the past year.
- Media and Advertising: 77.6% seen anti-smoking media in past 30 days; 78.3% seen pro-cigarette ads in past 30 days; 9.9% had brand-exposed objects.
- School Curriculum: 58.7% taught about smoking dangers, 23.6% discussed smoking reasons, 49.6% taught tobacco effects.
