Venezuela Tachira Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary for Ages 13-15
The 2001 survey assessed tobacco use among 13-15-year-old students in grades 6-9 in Venezuela's Tachira region, using a two-stage cluster sampling method. A total of 884 students participated, with an overall response rate of 67.4%. Key findings include:
- Smoking prevalence: 24.4% had ever smoked cigarettes, 12.7% currently used any tobacco product, and 8.0% smoked cigarettes. Gender disparities show females slightly higher in most categories.
- Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure: High levels, with over 41% living in homes where others smoke; 92.1% believe smoking should be banned in public places, and 72.7% think SHS is harmful.
- Media and advertising: Students widely exposed to both anti-smoking messages and pro-tobacco ads; nearly all saw anti-smoking media in the past 30 days, and many encountered cigarette brands or offers.
- School-based factors: Knowledge and attitudes highlight concerns about smoking for social reasons, with high support for cessation; most students had been taught about smoking dangers in school during the past year.
- Other determinants: 66.8% of smokers tried to quit; many purchase cigarettes easily, and parental smoking is common, with 39.4% having at least one parent smoker.
Overall, the survey indicates high tobacco use initiation and strong public support for control measures, highlighting key areas for comprehensive tobacco control programs.
