Indonesia-Jakarta GYTS Survey Summary
- Survey Overview: The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) conducted in Indonesia-Jakarta in 2000 targeted students aged 13-15 years. It used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a 91.6% overall response rate and a sample size of 1,490 participants covering schools, classes, and individual students.
- Key Findings: High tobacco use prevalence, with 22.0% of students currently using any tobacco product (including 21.8% smoking cigarettes and 2.5% using other forms). Notably, 46.7% had ever smoked cigarettes, and boys showed higher use than girls.
- Attitudes and Awareness: Strong opposition to smoking, with 88.9% supporting bans in public places and 93.5% acknowledging the harms of secondhand smoke. Nearly 80% of current smokers expressed desire to quit, with many attempting cessation and receiving help. Media exposure showed mixed influences, with high awareness of anti-smoking messages and prevalence of pro-cigarette ads.
- Secondhand Smoke Exposure: Over 69% of students lived in homes where others smoked, exposing them to smoke in and outside homes, with 83.5% reporting exposure to secondhand smoke.
- School-Based Factors: Education on smoking dangers was common, with most students discussing or learning about tobacco effects in school settings.
