Survey Overview
- Conducted in 2001 in Venezuela - Yaracuy GYTS, a school-based survey targeting 13-15 year old students (grades 6-9).
- Two-stage cluster sampling design used: schools selected proportionally to enrollment, then classes randomly chosen, with all eligible students in selected classes participating.
- Response rates: 100% school, 100% class, 87.5% student, overall 87.5%. Total participants: 934 students.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 16.2% (M=19.0%, F=13.6%).
- Currently uses any tobacco product: 12.1% (M=15.4%, F=9.0%).
- Currently smokes cigarettes: 5.1% (similar across genders).
- Currently uses other tobacco products: 7.8% (M=11.7%, F=4.3%).
- Never smokers likely to initiate smoking next year: 12.4%.
Determinants of Tobacco Use
- Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS): High rates—39.2% live in homes with others smoking, 46.3% exposed outside homes; 88.1% support smoking bans in public places.
- Access/availability: 26.2% usually smoke at home, 10.6% own objects with cigarette brand logos.
- Media: 81.5% saw anti-smoking ads in past 30 days; 75.2% saw pro-cigarette billboard ads, 73.1% saw them in print media.
- School factors: 41.8% taught about smoking dangers, 46.4% learned effects of tobacco use, 26.8% discussed age-related smoking reasons.
Knowledge and Attitudes
- Views on smoking: 61.5% believe smoke is harmful to others, 12.6% think boys smoke to gain friends, 7.1% find smoking attractive for boys.
- Friends and parental influence: 10.8% have most/all friends who smoke, 36.7% have at least one smoking parent.
- Initiation likelihood: 12.4% of never smokers likely to start smoking soon.
