Brazil - Aracaju Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary

Overview

The GYTS for Brazil - Aracaju included data on tobacco use prevalence and determinants among 13-15-year-olds. Conducted in 2002 with a two-stage cluster sample design, the survey involved 703 students from elementary and high school levels. A high response rate was achieved, with issues such as access to tobacco products and exposure to secondhand smoke addressed.

• Tobacco Use: A significant proportion of students used tobacco products. Ever smoked cigarettes was 29.8% (boys: 31.7%, girls: 28.6%). • Attitudes and Knowledge: High awareness that smoking is harmful; Slightly over 80% (87.1%) think public smoking should be banned, and most believe secondhand smoke is detrimental. Good understanding of media and advertising; about half were aware of anti-smoking messages, with less exposed to pro-tobacco ads.
• Determinants of Use: Common factors included age, male gender, having smoking peers or parents. Most students had not received cessation help, and over four-in-five owned items with cigarette logos.
• School Factors: Education aspects show that 52.8% learned about smoking dangers, and 31.2% discussed smoking reasons in class during the past year.
