Bridging Gaps for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health: Leveraging Technology for Impact
Summary
This report examines the rising burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health disorders in Asia and the Pacific, which has diverted from socioeconomic development and hindered progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Asia’s rapidly aging population and urbanization contribute to increased NCD prevalence, with technologies such as telemedicine and digital diagnostic tools playing a pivotal role in early detection and management.
The report presents a hybrid policy and knowledge-sharing conference convened by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Themed "Bridging Gaps for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health: Leveraging Technology for Impact," the conference focused on technology innovation to address persistent health challenges. It reviewed country experiences, explored transformative technologies, discussed regulatory considerations, and showcased successful models like remote consultations, digital health tools, and public-private partnerships.
Key findings highlight the need for integrated primary health care (PHC) approaches and equitable technology access to bolster universal health coverage (UHC). Continuous adoption and regulatory frameworks are essential to sustain these innovations.
Pre:
- Convened by ADB to address NCDs and mental health through regional technical assistance.
- Countries face challenges with risk factors, workforce scarcity, and financing gaps.
- Technology offers solutions like telemedicine and AI-driven diagnostics.
Secondary:
- The conference provided a platform for stakeholders to identify priorities and scale innovations for broader adaptation.
- Achieve UHC requires stronger health systems, addressing aging, and the social and economic impacts of NCDs.
Ethical and equity concerns must be addressed to ensure technologies serve vulnerable populations and enhance human well-being across Asia and the Pacific.
