Laos Vientiane Capital GYTS Survey Summary
This document summarizes the Global Youth Tobacco Survey conducted in Laos's Vientiane Capital region in 2007. The survey was a school-based study focusing on tobacco use among students aged 13-15, using a two-stage cluster sampling design to produce representative data. A total of 2,321 students participated, with high response rates: 100% school response, 100% class response, and 96.1% student response.
Key data points from the survey include prevalence rates:
- 6.9% had ever smoked cigarettes, with higher rates among boys (11.9%) than girls (2.6%).
- 5.7% currently used any tobacco product, with boys having a higher rate (7.8%) compared to girls (3.9%).
- Additional current use data: 3.0% smoked cigarettes, and 3.1% used other tobacco products.
The survey examined various determinants of tobacco use, such as:
- Access and availability: Many students purchased cigarettes easily, and parents of 42.6% smoked, potentially influencing students.
- Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS): High exposure rates, with 40.3% living in households where others smoked, and support for banning smoking in public places among most students (62.0% agree).
- Media and advertising effects: Over half (39.1%) saw anti-smoking messages, while nearly half (59.6%) saw pro-cigarette ads; few were offered free cigarettes.
- School-based factors: A large majority (61.8%) learned about smoking dangers in school.
- Cessation: High smoking cessation desire and attempts, with 84.4% smokers wanting to stop, and willing to seek help.
Overall, the survey highlighted significant youth tobacco use, high SHS exposure, and strong media influences, providing data for tobacco control programs in the region.
