Summary of the Clean Electrification Maturity Model (CEMM):

Background & Context:
The global energy sector is under pressure to decarbonize, increase clean electrification, and build resilient energy systems by 2030 (Paris Agreement). Utilities face significant challenges in grid modernization, decarbonization, and meeting rising electricity demand through multi-trillion-dollar investments.

The Clean Electrification Maturity Model (CEMM):

• A benchmarking tool developed by IBM and APQC to assess and improve utilities’ capabilities across eight key domains:
  Strategy & Leadership, Organization & Culture, Technology, Sustainability, Grid Operations, Work & Asset Management, Customer Experience, Market Innovation.
• Utilities are rated on a scale from Level 1 (Evaluating) to Level 5 (Leading), with an overall low average maturity score (Level 2) based on the global survey of 90 T&D utilities.

Key Insights & Gaps:

• Leadership & Strategy (Level 4):
  Leading utilities have clear organization-wide visions for innovation, stakeholder engagement, and tailored tariffs to fund transformation.

  • Example: 100% of mature utilities engage stakeholders vs. 46% of others; 57% have defined strategies vs. 24%.

• Technology (Level 3.5):
  Mature utilities excel in integrated IT/OT architectures, cybersecurity automation, and enabling advanced analytics (AI/ML).

  • Example: 91% align IT/OT roadmaps vs. 20% others; 95% use real-time dashboards vs. 20%.

• Grid Operations & DER Integration (Level 4):
  Advanced utilities manage distributed energy resources (DERs) and microgrids effectively using ADMS and DERMS systems.

  • Example: 95% manage DERs vs. 26% others; 95% use automated bidding platforms.

• Work & Asset Management (Level 3):
  Leading utilities leverage AI/ML for predictive maintenance, inventory forecasting, and mobility solutions for field operations.

  • Example: 82% use predictive analytics vs. 43% of others; 87% provide mobility solutions.

• Operations Challenges:

  • T&D utilities show low overall maturity, with a maturity gap between leaders and others.
  • Technology (IT/OT alignment, cybersecurity) and grid operations are major bottlenecks.

Action Plan:

1. Assess Maturity: Use CEMM to identify capability gaps enterprise-wide.
2. Set Targets: Prioritize domains with high impact (e.g., grid operations, technology, DER integration).
3. Quick Wins: Launch small-scale projects to demonstrate ROI before scaling.
4. Enterprise Alignment: Drive initiatives across all levels to achieve better operational efficiency, reliability, sustainability, and customer engagement.
