Methodology

This 2007 Global School-based Student Health Survey involved a two-stage cluster sampling design targeting students in grades 7, 8, I, and II across Macedonia.

• First Stage: Schools selected with probability proportional to enrollment size.
• Second Stage: Classes randomly selected, with all students in chosen classes eligible to participate.
• Response Rates: 100% school response rate, 93% student response rate, overall 93%.
• Participants: 2,114 students total.
• Data Collection: Students self-reported responses on computer scannable sheets.
• Analysis Scope: Only students aged 13-15 years included in this fact sheet.

• Negative consequences from alcohol use during life: 17.8% (Boys 17.8%, Girls 18.1%)
• Lifetime drug use: 1.8% (Boys 2.2%, Girls 1.1%)

Dietary Behaviours

• Hungry most/all time due to lack of food: 1.6%
• Overweight prevalence: 21.0% (Boys 27.4%, Girls 13.7%)
• Obesity prevalence: 3.3% (Boys 5.2%, Girls 1.1%)

Hygiene

• Tooth brushing less than once daily: 1.0% (Boys 4.0%, Girls 1.5%)
• Never/rarely wash hands before eating: 2.0% (Boys r 1.8%, Girls 2.2%)
• Never/rarely wash hands after toileting: 2.2% (Boys 1.7%, Girls 2.4%)

Mental Health

• Felt lonely most/always past 12 months: 6.2% (Boys 3.7%, Girls 8.9%)
• Seriously considered suicide past 12 months: 7.9% (Boys 5.3%, Girls 10.6%)
• Had no close friends: 2.3%

Physical Activity

• Met 60 mins daily physical activity, all 7 days: 16.2%
• Mean daily sitting time (watching TV, etc.): 49.9% (Boys 49.0%, Girls 51.1%)

Protective Factors

• Missed school without permission: 21.1% (Boys 24.6%, Girls 17.5%)
• School perceived as unkind/helpful often: 37.2% (Boys 43.2%, Girls 30.9%)
• Parents/guardians unsure of free time: 19.9% (Boys 24.0%, Girls 15.3%)

Sexual Behaviour

• Ever had sexual intercourse: 8.9% (Boys 14.4%, Girls 3.1%)
• Ever had intercourse with 2+ partners: 4.6% (Boys 7.8%, Girls 1.1%)
• (Among those who had sex recently) Used condom last time: 78.0%

Tobacco Use

• Past 30 days: smoked cigarettes: 10.5% (Boys 8.8%, Girls 12.3%)

Unintentional Injuries & Violence

• Physically attacked past 12 months: 19.5% (Boys 24.6%, Girls 13.8%)
• Involvement in physical fight past 12 months: 30.1% (Boys 40.7%, Girls 18.4%)
• Seriously injured past 12 months: 31.3% (Boys 36.7%, Girls 25.7%)
