Oman Global School-based Student Health Survey 2010 Summary
The 2010 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Oman assessed health behaviors and risk factors among students in grades 8, 9, or 10, focusing on dietary behaviors, hygiene, physical activity, protective factors, and violence/unintentional injury. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a high response rate and included only students aged 13-15 years for analysis, totaling 1606 participants.
Key findings for 13-15-year-olds:
- Dietary Behaviors: A high percentage of students drank carbonated soft drinks; boys consumed them most frequently, while girls consumed the least.
- Hygiene: Few students maintained daily tooth-brushing and hand-washing habits after using the toilet.
- Physical Activity: Only a minority met recommendations for daily physical activity; most spent excessive time on sedentary activities.
- Protective Factors: Many students missed classes without permission, and parents' understanding of children's issues was suboptimal.
- Violence and Unintentional Injury: Fighting and bullying were common, with significant injury rates reported.
Overall, the survey highlighted prevalent unhealthy behaviors and risks, indicating a need for targeted health interventions among this age group. For further details, contact the Ministry of Health, Oman.
