Overview
The 2010 Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) in Gaza, conducted by UNRWA, assessed dietary behaviors, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, tobacco use, and violence/unintentional injury among 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade students. A two-stage cluster sampling design was used, with a 100% school response rate and 95% student response rate. Analysis included students aged 13–15 years (N=2122).

Dietary Behaviours
- Underweight (< -2SD BMI-for-age/sex): Total 5.9% (CI: 4.2–8.2), Boys 8.0% (CI: 5.3–11.7), Girls 3.5% (CI: 1.5–8.1)
- Overweight (> +1SD BMI-for-age/sex): Total 20.2% (CI: 17.4–23.4), Boys 18.1% (CI: 14.9–21.9), Girls 22.6% (CI: 18.3–27.5)
- Obese (> +2SD BMI-for-age/sex): Total 4.0% (CI: 3.1–5.2), Boys 4.5% (CI: 3.2–6.3), Girls 3.5% (CI: 2.2–5.4)
- Carbonated soft drink consumption ≥ once daily in past 30 days: Total 41.6% (CI: 38.6–44.7), Boys 42.2% (CI: 38.2–46.3), Girls 40.6% (CI: 37.9–43.4)
Drug Use
- Percentage who first used drugs <14 years: Total 88.5% (CI: 75.2–95.1)
- Ever used marijuana: Total 3.5% (CI: 1.8–6.5), Boys 5.1% (CI: 2.5–10.2), Girls 1.6% (CI: 0.7–3.4)
Hygiene
- Brushed or cleaned teeth < once daily: Total 32.7% (CI: 27.8–37.9), Boys 41.2% (CI: 36.4–46.2), Girls 23.5% (CI: 21.4–25.8)
- Never or rarely washed hands after toilet: Total 5.3% (CI: 3.3–8.4), Boys 7.9% (CI: 4.7–12.7), Girls 2.5% (CI: 1.5–4.2)
Mental Health
- Seriously considered suicide in past 12 months: Total 18.1% (CI: 15.4–21.0), Boys 20.0% (CI: 16.0–24.8), Girls 16.1% (CI: 12.7–20.2)
- Attempted suicide ≥ once in past 12 months: Total 19.5% (CI: 16.4–23.1), Boys 22.8% (CI: 17.4–29.3), Girls 15.6% (CI: 13.1–18.5)
- No close friends: Total 8.7% (CI: 7.5–10.1), Boys 9.0% (CI: 7.4–10.9), Girls 8.2% (CI: 6.5–10.3)
Physical Activity

Violence and Unintentional Injury
