1. Overview
- Conducted among students in grades 1-6 (focused on ages 13-15 for analysis).
- Methodology: Census approach, student response rate of 84%, total participants 951.
- Students self-reported data on a computer scannable sheet.
2. Key Results for Ages 13-15
A. Alcohol Use
- 45.8% drank alcohol one or more days in the past 30 days. Boys (43.3%) and Girls (48.0%).
- Among students who ever drank (excluding a few sips), 90.8% had first drink before age 14.
- 28.7% drank so much they were really drunk at least once, BOYs (32.3%) GIRLS (25.3%).
B. Dietary Behaviours
- 62.3% drank carbonated soft drinks one or more times daily in the past 30 days.
C. Mental Health
- 19.4% seriously considered suicide in the past 12 months. BOYs (11.7%) GIRLS (27.0%).
- 8.2% had no close friends. BOYs (10.7%) GIRLS (5.8%).
D. Sexual Behaviours
- 30.5% had ever had sexual intercourse. BOYs (39.5%) GIRLS (21.8%).
- Among those who had sex, 76.5% first had sex before age 14. (Data for other points is below 100 students).
- Among those who had sex, 68.5% used condom last time. (Data for other points is below 100 students).
E. Tobacco Use
- 6.1% smoked cigarettes on one or more days in the past 30 days. BOYs (7.5%) GIRLS (4.3%).
- Among former smokers, 87.8% first tried before age 14. (Data below 100 students).
- 46.5% reported smoking occurred in their presence at least one day last week. (Very similar between BOYs 46.7%, GIRLS 46.0%).
F. Violence and Unintentional Injury
- 35.7% were in a physical fight at least once in the past year. BOYs (42.6%) GIRLS (28.4%).
- 39.0% were seriously injured at least once in the past year. BOYs (40.3%) GIRLS (37.7%).
- 27.8% were bullied at least one day in the past 30 days. BOYs (25.4%) GIRLS (30.3%).
