Mauritania Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) Summary

The Mauritania GYTS was a school-based survey conducted in 2009 among students aged 13-15 (specifically 1ère AS, 2ème AS, 3ème AS, and 4ème AS). Using a two-stage cluster sample design with probability proportional to enrollment, it aimed to assess tobacco use prevalence and determinants.

A total of 1,769 students participated, with high response rates (91.1% overall). Key findings include:

• Tobacco Use Prevalence: 22.1% of students had ever smoked cigarettes; 22.6% currently used any tobacco product; 11.6% currently smoked cigarettes; and 13.1% currently used other tobacco products. In youth who never smoked, 19.7% are likely to initiate smoking next year.

• Determinants of Use: Small percentage of students smoked at home (12.1%) or bought cigarettes in stores (49.4%); age often not a barrier to purchase. SHS exposure was moderate, with 37.5% living in homes where others smoked and 50.9% exposed outside home.

• Knowledge and Attitudes: Half of current smokers (50.9%) wanted to quit, and 61.2% tried to stop in the past year. Most students (74.1%) saw anti-smoking media in the last 30 days, while a significant portion (61.8%) was exposed to pro-tobacco ads.

• School-Related Factors: Approximately one-third (37.6%) were taught about smoking dangers in class during the past year.

The survey highlights high rates of tobacco use among youth in Mauritania, influenced by media, family, and school environments.
