Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) - Czech Republic (Ages 13-15)
This fact sheet summarizes data from the 2007 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in the Czech Republic, conducted among students aged 13-15. The survey used a two-stage cluster sampling design with a school response rate of 100%, class response rate of 100%, and student response rate of 84.7%, involving 3,191 participants. Key findings include high prevalence of tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), and various determinants.
Prevalence of Tobacco Use
- Ever smoked cigarettes: 70.4% (Boys 70.1%, Girls 70.9%)
- Current use of any tobacco product: 34.7% (Boys 33.8%, Girls 35.7%)
- Current cigarette smoking: 30.7% (Boys 27.1%, Girls 34.9%)
- Current use of other tobacco products: 14.9% (Boys 17.5%, Girls 11.8%)
Initiation and Cessation
- 26.2% of never smokers are expected to initiate smoking next year.
- Among current smokers, 52.6% want to stop, and 52.4% have received help to quit.
Secondhand Smoke Exposure
- 37.9% live in homes where others smoke when present; 75.1% are exposed outside the home.
- 50.5% have one or more parents who smoke, and 29.2% have most or all friends who smoke.
- Attitudes: 63.2% believe smoke from others is harmful, and 70.2% support banning smoking in public places.
Access and Availability
- 41.0% buy cigarettes from stores, with no refusals due to age for 79.1% of buyers.
- 2.3% usually smoke at home.
Media and Advertising
- 81.0% saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days; 75.5% saw pro-cigarette billboard ads, and 69.0% saw such ads in newspapers/magazines.
- 17.1% have cigarette brand logos nearby, and 7.4% were offered free cigarettes by tobacco companies.
School-Based Education
- 55.2% discussed smoking in class during the past year, including reasons for smoking and its effects.
Highlights
- One-third of students use tobacco; 10% smoke cigarettes.
- SHS exposure is high, with over one-third exposed to smoke from parents or friends.
