Summary of A(H5N1) Candidate Vaccine Viruses and Potency Testing Reagents
Candidate Vaccine Viruses
- Antigenic and Genetic Analyses: Conducted by WHO Collaborating Centres (CCs) within the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS). All candidate vaccine viruses (CVVs) on the table have passed two-way hemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests unless otherwise noted.
- Approval: National or regional control authorities approve vaccine composition and formulation for use in each country.
- Listed CVVs: Included are viruses from different lineages (e.g., clades 2.2, 2.3.2, 2.3.4) such as:
- A/Vietnam/1194/2004 (H5N1), lineage 2.2, available/in-development from NIBSC (UK), SJCRH (USA).
- A/Egypt/3300-NAMRU3/2008 (H5N1), lineage 2.2.1.1, available from NIBSC (UK) and CDC (USA).
- Safety: Specified CVVs have passed safety testing and can be handled under BSL-2 enhanced containment.
- Development Status: Institutes like CDC, SJCRH (USA), CCDC (China), and NIBSC (UK) are involved in developing and distributing CVVs; pending availability noted for some.
Potency Testing Reagents
- Reference Antigens: Listed with lots, units (µgHA/ml), and source CVVs (e.g., NIBRG-14 derived from A/Vietnam/1194/2004).
- Sheep Antisera: Detailed lots and targets (e.g., A/Anhui/1/2005-like; anti-HA and anti-NA), with availability from providers like NIBSC (MHRA, UK), CBER/FDA (USA), and TGA (Australia).
Distribution and Contact
- Ordering: Institutes provide contacts for CVV and reagent ordering (e.g., NIBSC (standards@nibsc.org), CBER/FDA (CBERshippingrequests@fda.hhs.gov), TGA (flu.reagents@tga.gov.au)).
- WHO Resources: Links to WHO recommendations and GISRS contacts for further details or general inquiries.
Notes
- WHO GISRS collaborates globally standardizing surveillance and vaccine development protocols for A(H5N1).
- Data is current as of 28 September 2022.
