Analysis Summary of A(H5) Non-A(H5N1) Candidate Vaccine Viruses and Potency Testing Reagents
Overarching Status
The WHO Collaborating Centres (WHO CCs) of the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) perform antigenic and genetic analyses for candidate vaccine viruses. All viruses listed have passed two-way haemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests, unless otherwise specified, and are subject to approval by national or regional control authorities for vaccine composition and formulation.
Candidate Vaccine Viruses Overview
- Subtype, Antigenic Prototype, and Clade: Viruses are categorized by these parameters, with examples including H5N6 and H5N8 variants.
- Development and Availability:
- Available viruses are from various WHO CCs and institutes, such as NIID in Japan and CDC in the USA.
- In preparation viruses are under development, pending approval, and not yet available.
- Safety and Containment: Candidate vaccine viruses have passed safety testing and can be handled under BSL-2 enhanced containment standards.
Specific examples:
- A/duck/Hyogo/1/2016 H5N6 (Clade 2.3.4.4e), developed by NIID, Japan.
- A/Sichuan/26221/2014 H5N6 (Clade 2.3.4.4a) and others from various institutes, with IDs like IDCDC-RG42A*.
- Preparing viruses include H5N6 strains from SJCRH, CCDC, and CDC.
Contact and Resources
- WHO CC contact details provided for vaccine virus orders and inquiries, including emails for CBER, CCDC, CDC, NIID, SJCRH, and HKU.
- Additional information and references available via WHO websites, addressing candidate vaccine viruses and potency testing reagents for different influenza types.
