IRENA's Energy Transition Support for Climate Action
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) plays a pivotal role in assisting countries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building climate resilience through renewable energy. IRENA's "Insight to Impact 2022" report highlights the Agency's extensive work with 83 countries, covering over 2 billion people and focusing on enhancing energy transition to support national climate goals.
IRENA provides tailored support through work packages centered on data and statistics, resource assessment, policy advice, and project facilitation. As of November 2022, the Agency had engaged with 5 continents, supporting nearly all UNFCCC regional groupings. Support has been provided across diverse areas, including:
- Strengthening countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and long-term low-emission development strategies (LT-LEDS).
- Facilitating grid integration studies and renewable energy readiness assessments.
- Developing customized data management tools for tracking emissions.
In Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Latin America, IRENA's engagement has accelerated renewable energy deployment. Examples include detailed country profiles for Morocco, Zambia, and South Africa, showcasing improved NDC tracking and implementation, alongside revenue-enhancing investment mechanisms.
Looking ahead, IRENA aims to scale up support for climate strategies and mobilize investment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The Agency will work closely with financial institutions and nations to advance the energy transition, ensuring that climate goals align with sustainable development policies.
