The 2009 Malawi Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) was a comprehensive study involving over 2,359 students aged 13-15 years. Conducted using a two-stage cluster sampling design with a school response rate of 100% and student response rate of 94%, it examined key health areas such as alcohol use, dietary behaviors, hygiene, mental health, sexual behaviors, tobacco use, and violence.

Key findings highlight significant issues: about 3.9% of boys and 2.5% of girls consumed alcohol in the past 30 days, with early initiation common among those who drank. Mental health concerns were high, with approximately 11.6% of students considering suicide, and similar rates (11.3%) attempting it during the past 12 months. Sexual behaviors showed that roughly 28.1% of boys (16.5% of girls) had sex by age 14, and protection was reported only by about 82.2% of first-time users. Other areas included moderate tobacco use and high rates of bullying, serious injury, and physical fights.

The survey provides valuable data for public health interventions in Malawi.
