Uruguay - Montevideo GYTS Summary (2007)
-
Survey Overview: The 2007 Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Uruguay-Montevideo assessed tobacco use prevalence and five determinants: access/availability, exposure to secondhand smoke, cessation, media and advertising, and school curriculum. It used a two-stage cluster sampling design with 100% school and class response rates initially and a 75.7% student response rate, involving 1,253 students aged 13-15.
-
Key Findings:
- Tobacco Use: 51.8% had ever smoked cigarettes; 20.0% currently smoke cigarettes, and 22.4% use any tobacco product.
- Initiation Risk: 29.5% of never smokers are likely to start smoking next year.
- Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS): 54.2% live in homes with smoking others, and 71.1% are exposed outside the home; 81.9% think SHS is harmful.
- Attitudes and Cessation: 51.3% of current smokers want to stop, and 57.7% have tried to quit; strong support for public smoking bans (81.9% agree).
- Media and Advertising: 94.7% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards over the past 30 days, and 87.8% saw anti-smoking messages; high exposure to tobacco branding.
- Education: Most students (63.2%) learned about tobacco dangers in school.
-
Additional Notes: The response rates were high initially, but student participation was partial. Data highlights significant youth tobacco use and support for tobacco control policies.
