Samoa GYTS Summary (Ages 13-15)

Survey Methodology

• Conducted in 2007, a school-based survey using two-stage cluster sampling from grades 8-11.
• 900 students aged 13-15 participated, with an overall response rate of 53.2%.
• Sampling involved selecting schools proportional to enrollment and then random selection of classes and students.

Prevalence of Tobacco Use

• 21.9% of students had ever smoked cigarettes.
• 23.5% currently used any tobacco product.
• 15.2% currently smoked cigarettes.
• 16.1% currently used other tobacco products.
• Key concerns: High initiation likelihood (26.9% of never smokers to start smoking next year) and significant cigarette use among youth.

Determinants of Tobacco Use

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)

• High SHS exposure: 62.8% are exposed outside home, 59.1% live in homes with others smoking.
• 48.1% have one or more parents who smoke.
• Attitudes: 41.2% believe SHS is harmful to them; 41.3% think smoking should be banned in public places.

Access and Availability

• 22.1% usually smoke at home; 36.3% buy cigarettes easily.
• Common access: Students often buy cigarettes in stores or have them readily available.

Media and Advertising

• 81.0% saw anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days.
• 68.0% were exposed to pro-cigarette ads on billboards or in print media.
• 69.5% saw pro-cigarette ads in newspapers or magazines recently.
• Nearly two-thirds (60.9%) have objects with cigarette brand logos at home.

Cessation and Prevention

• 66.2% of current smokers want to stop; 89.4% have received help to quit.
• High cessation interest but barriers remain.

Knowledge and Attitudes

• Misinformation: 36.7% think smoking helps socialize; 59.1% live with SHS exposure.
• Positive trends: Many students view smoking negatively, with support for public bans.

School Curriculum

• 44.9% learned about smoking dangers; 41.3% had classroom discussions on peer smoking.
