Influenza at the Human-Animal Interface Summary (January 9, 2012)

Avian Influenza H5N1 Updates

• Global Cases: 576 confirmed human cases globally; 339 (58.9% CFR).
• 2011 Cases: 60 cases from 5 countries (BAN, CAM, CHN, EGY, IND).
• Recent New Cases: 5 reported since last update (5 Dec 2011) – 4 Egypt, 1 China.
• Egypt Cases (Cluster): 4 cases in 1 family cluster and 1 separate adult case. All hospitalized and treated with Oseltamivir. 3 died; cause under investigation (contact with poultry). Public health risk assessed as low as per WHO.
• China Case: 1 death (42y; origin under investigation). Ongoing H5N1 events reported in poultry and wild birds in China (HK).
• Ongoing Circulation: H5N1 endemic in poultry confirmed in EGY, IND, CHN, and CAM per OIE/FAO. Increased report of bird outbreaks aligns with seasonal pattern.
• Transmission Assessment: Global epidemiologic findings still show limited human-to-human transmission of H5N1 virus; no community-level spread occurs. Outbreak summaries do not suggest an increase in public health risk.

Other Animal Influenza Viruses

• No new human cases reported since last update (including H3N2v).
• Limited human-to-human H3N2v transmission remains possible with close contact; appears mostly affecting children with disease severity similar to seasonal flu.

Risk Assessment

• WHO and other agencies (OIE/FAO) assess the overall public health risk from current H5N1 patterns and recent virus evolution as not increased.
