Human Infections with Avian Influenza A/H5N1

• Transmission: Only limited human-to-human transmission has occurred since the virus emerged in 2003; no community-level spread.
• Age Factor: Younger patients were more likely to survive than older ones.

Animal Health Events

• Country Status: Egypt and Indonesia declared H5N1 endemic in poultry, with FAO suggesting it circulates endemically in China, India, Viet Nam, and Bangladesh.
• Outbreaks: Fewer outbreaks were expected due to the season; new reports from Bangladesh and India in September.
