Influenza at Human-Animal Interface Summary (as of 10 August 2012)
Avian Influenza A(H5N1)
As of 10 August 2012, 608 laboratory-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection have been reported to WHO from 15 countries, with 359 deaths, spanning from 2003 to that date. Between January and August 2012, 30 human cases were reported, including two in Indonesia in July and August 2012, with no further linked cases. H5N1 viruses circulate endemically in poultry in China, Egypt, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Bangladesh, India, and Cambodia, following seasonal patterns in birds. The public health risk assessment indicates no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission, so the risk remains unchanged.
Influenza A(H3N2)v
In the United States, there has been an increase in A(H3N2)v infections. By 10 August 2012, 154 confirmed human cases were reported, primarily affecting children through direct or indirect exposure to pigs, with no documented human-to-human transmission. Cases showed no pandemic risk change, and adults may have some pre-existing immunity, but it does not provide cross-protection with seasonal vaccines. Monitoring is emphasized due to viral evolution.
Overall Public Health Risk and Recommendations
Flu viruses can evolve unpredictably, so global monitoring is crucial. Countries with animal outbreaks should implement biosafety measures, and collaboration with animal health partners is necessary to control risks and protect public health.
