WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) performs antigenic and genetic analyses for A(H7) candidate vaccine viruses. All candidate viruses posted have passed two-way haemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests. National or regional control authorities approve vaccine composition and formulation. Candidate vaccine viruses are sourced from WHO collaborating centres (e.g., MHRA in UK for Eurasian and American viruses, CDC in USA for some reassortants), have undergone safety testing, and can be handled under BSL-2 enhanced containment. Reference materials include freeze-dried reference antigens, pure HA, and sheep antisera, available from specified institutes.
