Methodology
The Uzbekistan-Tashkent Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) was a school-based survey conducted in 2008 among students aged 13-15. A two-stage cluster sample design was used, with schools selected proportional to enrollment and classes randomly chosen. Overall response rates were high: 95.4% school, 95.4% student, and 100% class participation. A total of 2,133 students responded.
Findings
Prevalence
- 7.7% of students had ever smoked cigarettes (higher among boys).
- 2.2% currently use any tobacco product.
- 1.8% currently smoke cigarettes, with 0.6% being daily smokers.
- 17.1% ever smoked initiated before age ten.
Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)
- 17.3% live in homes where others smoke.
- 46.7% are exposed to SHS in places outside their homes.
- 56.1% believe SHS is harmful, and 91.7% support banning smoking in public places.
Media and Advertising
- 90.6% were exposed to anti-smoking media messages in the past 30 days.
- 52.1% saw pro-cigarette ads on billboards and 42.1% in newspapers/magazines.
- High awareness: 90.6% saw anti-smoking messages, and classes frequently discussed smoking dangers or effects during the past year.
- Some students were offered free cigarettes or saw brand logos, and social influences included parental and peer smoking.
