Rwanda Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2008

Objective: Assessed prevalence of tobacco use and determinants among 13-15-year-olds in Rwanda.

Methodology: Two-stage cluster sampling design involving selection of schools proportional to enrollment size, followed by random class selection. High response rates: overall 91.8%, with 688 students participating.

Key Highlights:

• Tobacco Use Prevalence: 1.8% of students currently use any tobacco product; 16.3% had ever smoked cigarettes (boys 23.5%, girls 9.5%); approximately one in ten likely to initiate smoking.
• Determinants of Use: 14.0% of students live in homes with smoking others; 85.6% believe secondhand smoke (SHS) is harmful in public places; 77.1% think SHS is directly harmful; 90% or more hold positive attitudes and knowledge about tobacco risks.
• Media Exposure: 81.2% observed anti-smoking messages; nearly half saw pro-cigarette ads, indicating mixed messaging.
• School Factors: Many students received classroom education on smoking dangers and effects.

The survey shows moderate tobacco prevalence and strong youth awareness of risks, suggesting potential for enhanced tobacco control programs.
