Background and Method

The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) for Côte DIvoire - Ville Sud was a school-based survey conducted in 2003 on students aged 13-15, using a two-stage cluster sample design. It included five determinants of tobacco use: access/availability, exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS), cessation, media and advertising, and school curriculum.

Sample and Response Rates

Schools selected with probability proportional to enrollment.
Classes randomly selected, and all eligible students participated.
School response rate: 84.6%, class response rate: 100%, student response rate: 93.6%, overall response rate: 79.2%.
Total participants: 1,760 students.

Prevalence of Tobacco Use

Ever smoked cigarettes: 36.2% (males: 50.5%, females: 20.8%).
Currently use any tobacco product: 16.6% (males: 22.5%, females: 10.0%).
Currently smoke cigarettes: 14.1% (males: 20.9%, females: 6.8%).
Currently use other tobacco products: 5.0% (males: 5.4%, females: 4.7%).
Likely to initiate smoking next year: 12.5% of never smokers.

Knowledge and Attitudes

Perceived harm and attitudes: 84.7% believe smoking should be banned from public places, and 41.6% think SHS is harmful to them.
Likelihood to stop: 89.0% want to stop smoking, and 75.9% tried to stop in the past year.
Gender differences: Higher initiation likelihood for males compared to females.

Exposure to Secondhand Smoke (SHS)

High exposure rate: 39.6% live in homes where others smoke, and 66.7% are exposed in public places.
Nearly all (100%) have at least one smoking parent, though SHS perception is largely correct.

Media and Advertising

Media exposure: 57.0% saw anti-smoking messages in the past 30 days, while 79.7% saw pro-cigarette ads (e.g., billboards: 68.9%, newspapers/magazines: 51.9%).
